For the gambler, playing roulette is ease itself. You place your bet and wait for the wheel to stop. The croupier is the “dealer” of roulette, the casino employee in charge of spinning the wheel and dropping the ball, of calling the number, of taking bets and returning winnings. Online roulette makes this even easier, because you don’t even need to wait for the croupier (or other players)!

You have your choice of “Inside bets” (the high paying bets) or “Outside bets” (the better odds). They may be based on the numbers themselves or on their location and arrangement on the printed betting surface of the roulette table (in which case the placement of the chip is crucial to determining the exact bet that you wish to make).

Inside bets include betting on any single number (straight-up) and betting on two adjoining numbers (split, also Row 00 if it includes 0 and 00). A “trio” bet or “basket” is on the only triangular intersections (0 + 1 + 2, 00 + 2 + 3, or 0 + 00 + 2). A “street” bet is on any three in a line, and a “corner” or “square” bet is on any four numbers that make a ‘box’ (two by two) on the table. You can bet on five numbers with the “top row” bet (0, 00, 1, 2, and 3), and six with the “six line” which bets on two adjoining streets.

Outside bets include all of the ‘half and half’ bets, where any number on the designated half of the roulette wheel will win. These can be divided by numbers (“1 to 18” or “19 to 36“), colors (“Red” or “Black“), or simply “Even” versus “Odd“. Outside bets also include the bets that split the wheel into thirds; a Dozen Bet allows you to choose either of the three groups of twelve (1-12, 13-24, or 25-36), while a Column Bet is on one of the three columns of 12 numbers printed on the betting table.

Note that the divisions are not precisely accurate, as the green pockets are “house pockets” — they may be bet on individually as with all other numbers, but do not count towards any other bet.

As with any casino game, “house rules” may or may not apply. There may be extra bets or limitations on bets that differ from one casino to the next, so it is always recommended that you verify the details before putting any money down. However, the bets listed here are valid for a vast majority of casinos, American and European alike….including “land-based” (brick and mortar) casinos as well as online casinos.
